Rawlins Range Days Cattle Dog Trial was held on Saturday, May 29, 2004 as part of the Memorial Day celebration sponsored by the Rawlins Chamber of Commerce headed up by a very enthusiastic Ed Vandenberg. The trial host was Jim Chant from Baggs, WY. In addition to jackpotting back a percentage of the entry fees there was and additional $1000.00 added and the Open Handler won a beautiful buckle. The trial was sanctioned by the USBCHA, (United Stated Border Collie Handlers Association.). The Open Cattle Dog winner earns points that can qualify them for the handlers association cattle dog trial finals in 2005. It was a very cold windy day and the cattle were plenty tough. The trial was scored by time and points and the judge was Dorrance Eicamp, announcer was Tom Chant. Thanks to every one who participated and to the Rawlins Chamber of Commerce for sponsoring the event! Three cattle courses were ran.
The Ranch class was for beginning handlers. There were 6 entries and the placing was:
- Jack Berger with his dog Belle, Points; 85, Winnings $150.00.
- Ed Buchanan, dog Gyp, Points 70, Winnings $100.00.
The next class was the combined Open Ranch & Nursery Dogs. There were 5 entries.
The placing was:
1. Lee McKibben , dog Banjo, Points: 70, Winnings $180.00
2. Gerald Bunny, dog Hank, Points: 40, Winnings $120.00
The Open Cattle Class started in the afternoon at 3pm after Baxter Blacks performance. The other classes ran in the morning before lunch. There were 14 dogs entered and the placing was:
1. Ken Mitts, dog Mack, Points: 120, Winnings $500.00 (He completed the course in the shortest time which is the tie breaker)
2. Juan Reyes, dog Cassie, Points: 120, Winnings $375.00
3. Clyde Johnson, dog Reno, Points: 115, Winnings $250.00
4. Stan Slagowski, dog Jim, Points: 70, Winnings $125.00
